About Detroit Labs

Detroit Labs is a mobile app design and development studio headquartered in downtown Detroit, MI.

They work with a wide range of consumer brands and corporate customers to build native mobile apps for iOS and Android, watchOS and Wear OS apps for wearables, as well as responsive web applications.

While mostly independently owned, Detroit Labs is a member of the Dan Gilbert family of businesses, and as of 2017, was operated as a Holocracy. My time working there was, shall we say bureaucratically interesting.

My Role at Detroit Labs

As a UI/UX designer, I led the design of multiple mobile apps, including connected EV management for Volkswagen, and bill payment for DTE Energy.

I also worked with an embedded team at Lineage Logistics to design the data visualization interface for their internal metrics tracking web app.

Below is a selection of applications that I worked on while at Detroit Labs.

Volkswagen Car-Net

2016-2017
I worked as a product designer to create the first version of Volkswagen's native iOS, Android, watchOS and Wear OS applications for VW's EVs and connected internal combustion vehicles.

The ground-up design extended Volkswagen's visual brand to mobile devices, and took advantage of the available APIs for car feature connectivity including charging, fuel levels, maintenance alerts, GPS, and more.

2016-2017
I worked as a product designer on the bill payment and outage experiences in the iOS app for DTE, Michigan's largest energy utility with more than 2.3M customers.

Lineage Logistics

2017
I worked as a product designer to create metricsOne, a responsive internal web application for Lineage Logistics, one of the nations largest cold warehouse and transportation providers.

The app focused primarily around metrics visualization, dashboarding, and alerting for warehouse and business KPIs to more quickly identify operational and commercial issues that need attention.
